About This Blog

This blog is aimed, specifically, at teaching students of fashion design how to make close-fit stretch-wear patterns. While the public can certainly learn a lot from reading the blog, they may find they need the added guidance of an "in class" fashion teacher ... I'm not going to provide this level of instruction.

Everything you need to design women's swim or dancewear patterns is already here. By combining the various elements of each lesson a design student should be able to create any number of designs. I will not be adding new patterns unless it becomes necessary for one of my classes.

If you'd like to keep in touch with like minded creative people then feel free to add me as a friend on facebook ... I love to see what others are doing ... just type Pattern School as the message and I'll know to add you.

My experiment in alternative fashion can be seen at Itty Bitty Evil Kitty ... please drop by and add your opinions and help shape the experiment.

Bikini Top Patterns

All the bikini top patterns except the triangle are based on the one piece block. You need to have completed this before proceeding to those patterns. From time to time I’ll be adding new patterns so check back now and then. If you’d like to see a pattern made from your own design then please email me a sketch or leave a comment in the section below and if it’s straight forward enough then I’ll have a go and put it up here. Hi Stuart!

I too am interested in sewing a suit which would incorporate a twist bandeau style top. Have you thought any more about detailing the pattern work for this kind of garment? The suit I’m hoping to replicate is found below, any suggestions about the twist bandeau or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Stuart
I just finished sewing the bandeau after making my own pattern from your instructions.
It fits perfectly :) I put a buckle in the front middle and love how it turned out.
Thank you so much for this site, I’m surely gonna use it again to help me make patterns.
    Best regards,

  • Hi Tracy, no I don’t sell patterns as they’re all here free for the taking … they really aren’t all that hard to do if you read everything carefully and you get a good set of measurements to start with. Don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t work the first time … it’s all about practice and learning … no one ever made something perfectly the first time! :-)

    Hi Stuart
I’m new to your site and love it! Do you sell any of your swimwear patterns? I’m new at sewing and have not got to the point wear i can make my own patten yet.

    Thanks

Hi Danielle. I will add this style to my To Do List. I’ve always avoided this style because people have trouble understanding how to hide/lose darts. I think it’ll make a great addition … thanks!

First I want to thank you for this amazing site! You have helped tremendously with my handmade swimsuit patterns. I don’t know a single woman who likes swimsuit shopping and the majority of us women (especially those of us who have had children) have some body part that we don’t like so much. I love the bikini help and ideas but I was wondering if you have dabbled in the twist front bandeau style. I’d like to try making one but I don’t want to waste fabric and my sanity with experimenting. I’ve not found a pattern (not a fan of premade patterns anyway) so this task has proven a bit difficult for me. They look like you’d sew two pieces right sides together, turn right sides out and literally twist but I’m unsure if this is correct to get the desired look. Any help on the concept would be great!

    Dear Stuart,

This is so interesting the fact you answered me and supported me is great! The swimsuits in the stores aren’t new and they all look alike I just love this website.

Deborah: With a little ingenuity you can pretty much mix and match most styles … just be careful not to undercut any thing that might have be under tension in my design lesson. What you’re suggesting should work just fine.

Could I use this halter top instead of of the top that is on the one piece Bandeau/Empire line supported Cutaway swimsuit? I could tie the halter top at the neck line and also tie it in the back. I would have to make a band at the bottom of the halter top and then sew it to the top of the bandeau suit and the band would tie in the back.
