About This Blog

This blog is aimed, specifically, at teaching students of fashion design how to make close-fit stretch-wear patterns. While the public can certainly learn a lot from reading the blog, they may find they need the added guidance of an "in class" fashion teacher ... I'm not going to provide this level of instruction.

Everything you need to design women's swim or dancewear patterns is already here. By combining the various elements of each lesson a design student should be able to create any number of designs. I will not be adding new patterns unless it becomes necessary for one of my classes.

If you'd like to keep in touch with like minded creative people then feel free to add me as a friend on facebook ... I love to see what others are doing ... just type Pattern School as the message and I'll know to add you.

My experiment in alternative fashion can be seen at Itty Bitty Evil Kitty ... please drop by and add your opinions and help shape the experiment.

Swimsuit of the Week

I have to say I love this swimsuit by Herve Leger. OK it’s not my favorite colour choice and I’d move the lines a little, but this is a very clever garment. I’m saddened to see so many negative comments about it on so many fashion blogs so I’m going to give it my personal . . . → Read More: Swimsuit of the Week

Need Help With A Stretch Fit Pattern?

Hi Everyone. If you hadn’t noticed I don’t check on this blog everyday any more.

If you do have a question about pattern making, or a particular problem you’re trying to fix, please remember it helps if you can send me either a scan of your paper pattern (or photo) or your CAD . . . → Read More: Need Help With A Stretch Fit Pattern?

Never Believe What Your Told!

For the last month there has been a bug somewhere in the Lazy Person’spatterns section that has been driving me nuts because no matter what I tried I couldn’t get it to happen for me. Sometimes the patterns would work and sometimes they wouldn’t … but it would be different patterns for different people . . . → Read More: Never Believe What Your Told!

Pattern Magic

I recently purchased Pattern Magic by Nakamichi Tomoko online at Amazon and while waiting for it to arrive I happened upon it at a local bookstore (at twice the cost) so I couldn’t resist looking through it. I have to say straight up that this book was so good I bought it there and then on . . . → Read More: Pattern Magic

Flat vs Draping in Stretch-Fit?

I read another interesting post today on fashion-incubator about getting patterns digitised (Kathleen covers all the good topics). It was about all the things you need to think about when getting your paper patterns ready for digitising … and it got me thinking too … why would anyone in industry still be working on paper? . . . → Read More: Flat vs Draping in Stretch-Fit?

Other Free Pattern Sites

Well if the obvious hadn’t hit me in the face this morning (thanks Monica) I’d never even have thought about this … which is kinda dumb considering what I’m doing here. Well ok I do have something in my defense … I’m trying to teach pattern making rather than just give away free patterns. . . . → Read More: Other Free Pattern Sites

Laziness Is A Curse

I recently added a metric to imperial unit converter to the site. A few American friends thought I wasn’t being very nice because as an Australian I used the metric system … and this was in some way deliberately prejudiced (one even called me racist because obviously being the bigger nation the USA way . . . → Read More: Laziness Is A Curse

Stare Into The Swirling Disk And Repeat After Me ….

Now I’m going to start out by saying I used to think I was pretty good at this stuff.  I’ve tried many different ways to create a replica of the Gottex one piece picture in the previous post and I’ve not had the level of success I’d hoped for. I have been able to . . . → Read More: Stare Into The Swirling Disk And Repeat After Me ….

You Want To Put What, Where??

Hi everyone. I’ve made a few small changes to the site here and there this last couple of weeks. Firstly the comments now appear from newest to oldest rather than oldest at the top … I’m starting to get more messages than will appear on one page and it seems silly to have to click . . . → Read More: You Want To Put What, Where??

What Constitutes A Good Fit?

Ok so it’s been a few weeks since you last heard from me! I’ve finally got my youngest off to school for the first time and there’s been a little adjustment to the family scheduling. It’s been an interesting and challenging time for all involved!

Two new things of interest for you. I . . . → Read More: What Constitutes A Good Fit?
